[noun] ① Buddhist language. (a) A term used by Buddhists to refer to teachings other than Buddhism. Also refers to a person who adheres to a religion other than Buddhism. Foreign learning. Foreign religion. Paganism. *Commentary on the Sūtra Sutra (611), Chapter on Lamenting the True Merits of the Buddha: "I have heard, and have followed closely what Anan has said to me. What he has transmitted is not false , and I have naturally misunderstood it ." [Large Chapter on the Prajnaparamita, Vol. 8] (b) Refers to the Hinayana school within Buddhism. Internal and external teachings. *Okina no Bun (1746), Vol. 10: "He has expounded on the heavens in thirty-two ways. All of this is heretical (Gedō) ." ② A teaching that goes against the truth. Also, that person. A false teaching. An evil way. ※From the Sanbo-e Kanchi-in Hon (984): "The foolish people of the world laughed at this and called him the Monkey Saint. (Omitted) 'You are a heretic,' they said, laughing at him." ③ A person who brings misfortune. An evil god. A demon. ※From the Momotaro origin story in the Kibyō (1792): "The exorcists gathered together the heretics they had caught." ④ A mask in the form of a demon or a monster. Also, a disguise. ※From the Shichihennin (1857-63), Vol. 5: "If it's my own gedau , then I can do it without any problems . " ⑤ A word used to insult someone. ※From the Shichihennin (1857-63), Vol. 5: "You wicked demon gedau , you are hindering people's secret virtues." ⑥ An immoral act. An act that deviates from the path of man. Also, a person who does such a thing. ※Nippo Jisho (1603-04) "Guedǒuo (gedauwo) nasu" ⑦ A fish caught in addition to the intended fish when fishing. ※Blue Monday (1965-67)〈Kaiko Ken〉 1 "There may be some eels or trout mixed in with the other fish."
