German educator. Born in Siegen. After graduating from university, he taught at several schools, and from 1820 to 1847 served as principal of the newly established normal schools in Moers and Berlin. After a period as an independent educator who was friends with Froebel, he was active in his later years as a member of the Prussian National Assembly representing Berlin from 1858. Germany in the first half of the 19th century was in a period of institutional development of the folk school, or primary public education, and from his position as a teacher trainer he worked hard to improve its quality.

ドイツの教育家。ジーゲンに生まれる。大学卒業後，数種の学校での教師生活を経て，1820年より47年までメールスおよびベルリンの新設師範学校長を歴任。フレーベルとの親交があった在野の教育家としての活動の時期を経て，晩年は1858年からベルリン選出のプロイセン下院議員として活躍した。19世紀前半のドイツは民衆学校＝初等公教育の制度的発展期に当たるが，教員養成者としての立場からその質的向上のために尽力した。
