1790‐1866 German educator. Born in Siegen. After graduating from university, he taught at several schools, and from 1820 to 1847 served as principal of the newly established normal schools in Moers and Berlin. After a period as an independent educator who was friends with Froebel, he was active in his later years as a member of the Prussian National Assembly representing Berlin from 1858. Germany in the first half of the 19th century was in a period of institutional development of the folk school, or primary public education, and from his position as a teacher trainer he worked hard to improve its quality.
