Karasuzansho - Karasuzansho

Japanese: カラスザンショウ - からすざんしょう
Karasuzansho - Karasuzansho

A deciduous tall tree of the Rutaceae family (APG classification: Rutaceae). It grows 5-8 meters tall, with many thorns on the branches. The leaves are oblong-lanceolate, 5-10 cm long, with sawtooth edges, whitish-green undersides, and have a scent of corn and vanilla. The leaves are odd-pinnate and compound, with around 10 pairs of leaflets. Dioecious. In summer, the panicle grows at the top, with numerous, small, pale green flowers. There are five sepals and five petals. Male flowers have five stamens, and female flowers have one pistil made up of three carpels. The capsule contains pungent seeds, which is said to be the origin of the name. It grows in the forest edges of warm areas from Honshu to Okinawa, and is also distributed in China, Korea, and the Philippines.
