A general term for compounds in which one or both of the two hydrogen atoms of the dibasic acid carbonic acid CO(OH) ₂ are replaced with a hydrocarbon group. Monoesters with only one substitution, RO-CO-OH, are very unstable and easily decompose into alcohol and carbon dioxide, but can be stably extracted as metal salts by reacting an alcohol solution of a metal hydroxide or a metal alkoxide with carbon dioxide. Diesters RO-CO-OR, which are disubstituted compounds, are liquids with an ether-like odor and undergo various substitution reactions in the same way as carboxylic acid esters.

二塩基酸である炭酸CO(OH)₂の2個の水素原子のうち，一つあるいは二つを炭化水素基で置換した化合物の総称。一つだけ置換したモノエステルRO－CO－OHは非常に不安定で，容易にアルコールと二酸化炭素に分解するが，金属水酸化物のアルコール溶液または金属アルコキシドに二酸化炭素を反応させることにより，金属塩として安定にとりだすことができる。二置換体であるジエステルRO－CO－ORはエーテル様の香気をもつ液体で，カルボン酸エステルと同様に種々の置換反応を受ける。
