In the Edo period, these peddlers traveled around selling paper for fans, and would repaper old fans upon request. They were particularly popular around the Genroku period (1688-1704), when they were known for their showy business attire, and were popular among the common people for their impersonations of actors' voices and ukiyo-e. Some of them even engaged in male homosexuality. Their popularity gradually declined after the Kansei period (1789-1801), when Kyoto-made fans became available for cheap purchase in Edo.
