A village in Kamiukena County, central southern Ehime Prefecture. Population 2,649 (1995). Located in the mountains of the Shikoku Mountains, it is surrounded by high mountains such as Myojinyama (1,541m), Okawamine (1,525m), and Rougajoyama (1,380m), with an average elevation of 800m. The Omogo River runs through the center, and the Kuma River joins it from the west. The east borders Kochi Prefecture. On the river terrace of the Kuma River are the Kamikuroiwa Rock Shelter Ruins (history), which date from the late Paleolithic period to the early Jomon period. Kaiganyama Iwaya-ji Temple, located in Takeya, Nanadori, in the northern part of the village, is the 45th temple of the 88 Shikoku Pilgrimage Sites, and is said to be the sacred site of the Hokke Sennin, where Kukai practiced training. 愛媛県中央南部,上浮穴(かみうけな)郡の村。人口2649(1995)。四国山地の山間にあり,周囲を明神山(1541m),大川嶺(1525m),狼ヶ城(ろうがじよう)山(1380m)などの高山に囲まれ,平均標高800m。中央を面河(おもご)川が貫流,西から久万(くま)川が合流する。東は高知県に接する。久万川の河岸段丘上には旧石器時代晩期~縄文早期の上黒岩岩陰遺跡(史)がある。村域北部,七鳥(ななとり)の竹谷にある海岸山岩屋寺は四国八十八ヵ所45番札所で,法華仙人の霊跡に空海が練行したところと伝える。
