A former town in Kuga County in eastern Yamaguchi Prefecture. It occupies the middle reaches of the Nishiki River and is mostly mountainous. Farmland is scattered on the mountain slopes, producing rice, chestnuts, and plums. The Kawayama Mine, which produced copper and iron sulfide ore, closed in 1971. The Nishiki River Railway runs through the town. There is a habitat for the Japanese bush frog (a natural monument) in Nagwa. 山口県東部,玖珂(くが)郡の旧町。錦川の中流域を占め,大部分は山地。農地は山地斜面に点在し,米,クリ,ウメを産する。銅,硫化鉄鉱を産した河山(かわやま)鉱山は1971年に閉山した。錦川鉄道が通じる。南桑(なぐわ)にカジカガエル生息地(天然記念物)がある。2006年3月玖珂郡由宇町,玖珂町,周東町,錦町,美和町,本郷村と岩国市へ編入。75.85km2。1806人(2003)。
