A type of rotorcraft that generates lift using rotors, like helicopters. Although the appearance is very similar, whereas helicopters use power to drive their rotors, autogyros do not have a direct power connection to the rotors. Instead, the rotors spin automatically due to the wind generated when the aircraft moves forward with its propeller, generating lift and allowing the aircraft to fly. As a result, autogyros cannot hover in the air like helicopters. They also cannot take off and land vertically, but they have the distinctive features of being able to fly stably even at low speeds and have a very short runway for takeoff and landing. Today, they are often used for leisure and sports. They were invented by Juan de la Cierva of Spain, and first flew in 1923.
