…Aquatic plants are also called mizukusa. They are submerged plants such as waterweed and shrimp grass, whose entire plant body is underwater with its roots on the bottom; floating-leaved plants such as water shield and pondweed, whose leaves float on the water surface; emergent plants such as cattails and lotus, whose leaves and stems are above the water surface; and floating plants such as duckweed and bladderwort, whose entire plant body does not touch the bottom and floats on or below the water surface. In some cases, the term is limited to freshwater higher plants, while in other cases it includes marine higher plants such as eelgrass and large algae.
