Hiroyuki Miura

A historian who lived from the Meiji period to the early Showa period. Born on June 4, 1871, in Takeya Village, Yatsuka County, Shimane Prefecture. His childhood name was Rokunosuke, but he later changed his name to Shugyo. In 1890 (Meiji 23), he entered the elective course at the Faculty of Letters of the Imperial University, and also studied Mitogaku at Kurita Hiroshi's private school, Fujin Gakusha. In 1995, he became an assistant historiographer, and in 1900, a historiographer, publishing "A Study of the Goningumi System." In 1902, he became a lecturer at the Faculty of Letters of the Law School, the following year, and in 1905, he became a historiographer, and compiled the fifth volume of "Dai Nihon Shiryo." In 1907, he lectured at the Faculty of Letters of Kyoto Imperial University, and in 1909, he became a professor and doctor of literature. As a historiographer, he assisted in collecting historical materials in the Kansai area, while also training many researchers and educators. The papers written during this period were compiled between 1914 (Taisho 8) and 1930 (Showa 5) in two volumes each of "Studies in Legal History" and "Studies in Japanese History." Immediately after his retirement in 1931, he was admitted to Kyoto University Hospital and died of stomach cancer on September 6th. His scholarship began with research into institutional history and included empirical research into political and social history, and he also had a deep interest in reality. "Social Problems in National History" (1920) was Miura's own academic response to the rice riots.

明治~昭和初期の歴史学者。明治4年6月4日、島根県八束(やつか)郡竹矢村に生まれる。幼名録之助(ろくのすけ)、周行と改名する。1890年(明治23)帝国大学文科大学選科に入り、別に栗田寛(くりたひろし)の家塾輔仁学舎で水戸学を学ぶ。95年に史料編纂(へんさん)助員、1900年に史料編纂員となり『五人組制度の研究』を刊行。02年法科大学、翌年文科大学講師嘱託、05年史料編纂官となり、『大日本史料』第五編をいちおうまとめる。07年から京都帝国大学文科大学に出講、09年に教授・文学博士となる。史料編纂補助として関西方面の史料収集に協力しつつ、多くの研究者・教育者を養成した。この間の論文は、19年(大正8)から30年(昭和5)にかけて『法制史の研究』『日本史の研究』(各2冊)にまとめられた。31年定年退官の直後に京大病院に入院、胃癌(いがん)のために9月6日死去した。その学問は、制度史的研究から始まり政治史・社会史の実証的研究をまとめたもので、現実への関心も深かった。なお、『国史上の社会問題』(1920)は、米騒動に対する三浦なりの学問的反応であった。
