A tragedy by the English playwright J. Webster. First performed in 1614. It is based on The Palace of Pleasures by the 16th-century writer William Painter. The lively and beautiful widowed Duchess of Malfea secretly marries Antonio, a conscientious steward, and gives birth to two children. However, this fact is soon discovered by her two brothers, the Cardinal and Ferdinand, Duke of Calabria, who are both esteemed for the honor of the family. To avoid her brothers' revenge, she lets her husband escape and tries to escape to another country herself, but she is captured and, after being subjected to repeated and extremely cruel mental torture in prison by the cruel Bosola, a pawn of her brothers, she is strangled to death along with her maid.
