Japanese: マルバギシギシ - まるばぎしぎし

A single genus and species of Polygonaceae perennial plant (illustration) that grows in temperate high mountains around the Arctic and in sunny rocky areas in the cold zone of the northern hemisphere. In Japan, it is found in high mountains from central Honshu northward and in Hokkaido. The entire plant is hairless, and the roots are spindle-shaped and go deep underground. The basal leaves are clumpy, soft, kidney-shaped, 1.5-2.5 cm long, and have long stalks. The flowering season is July-August, and the flower stalks are 10-30 cm tall, with green to greenish-pink flowers in racemes with four tepals, six stamens, and two styles.

北極をとりまく北半球温帯の高山から寒帯の日当りのよい岩礫地（がんれきち）などに生える1属1種のタデ科の多年草（イラスト）。日本では，本州中部以北の高山と北海道に分布する。全草無毛，根は紡錘形で深く地中に入る。根出葉は叢生（そうせい）し，軟質で腎円形，長さ1.5～2.5cm，長い葉柄がある。花期は7～8月，花茎は高さ10～30cm，緑色から緑紅色の花は総状花序につき，花被片は4枚，おしべは6本，花柱は2本。
