...Korea has not been blessed with superior inkstone materials like China, but among them, Igen stone, Daedonggang stone, Haeju stone (Ongjin stone), Jongseong stone, and Lanpo stone are considered to be relatively good materials. During the ancient Lelang period, Han-style stone inkstones were used, such as the inkstones excavated from Saikyouzuka, and during the Silla and Baekje dynasties, ceramic inkstones with wind character and round inkstones similar to those used in the Tang Dynasty were used. Among the inkstones excavated in Japan, there are some from Silla and Baekje, which are thought to have been brought from Korea....

…In China, individual stationery items such as brushes, inks, inkstones, and paper were highly valued, and it was traditional to attach legs to inkstones, or to use a stand called an inkstone stand or a lid in the shape of an inkstone. The same was true of the inkstones used in Japan from the Nara period to the Heian period, which continued the shape used in China, as seen in the round inkstone with stand excavated from the Heijo Palace ruins and the white porcelain round inkstone said to be a relic of Sugawara no Michizane at Domyoji Tenmangu Shrine in Osaka Prefecture. Inkstone boxes began to be made in the latter half of the Heian period, and are thought to have been made at the earliest in the first half of the 10th century. …
