It is the capital of the province of Luxembourg in the southeast of Belgium. It is located near the border with the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. It is the oldest settlement of Roman origin in Belgium. It was fortified in the 4th century and became the capital of the count's state in the 10th century. Due to fires in the 16th to 18th centuries, almost no medieval buildings remain, but Roman ruins, an archaeological museum, and a 17th century cathedral remain. It is an important livestock and agricultural market in the Ardennes Plateau, and is also a stopover on the international railway line linking Brussels, Namur, and Luxembourg. Some of the residents commute across the border to work in Luxembourg and France, for example at steel-related factories. Population: 23,422 (1991).
