Humanitas

…The oldest surviving example of this term dates back to the end of the 15th century in Italy. It is written as umanista in Italian (or humanista in Latin), and seems to have originated as a student term at universities at that time. It seems that professors of humanitas came to be called humanista, following the custom of calling professors of law (legge) leggista and professors of canon law (canone) canonista. Incidentally, humanitas was the most popular subject among university students at the time. …
