A state in the northeastern corner of India. It has an area of 22,300 km2 and a population of 1.84 million (1991). Its capital is Imphal. It is made up of several mountain ranges at altitudes of 1,500 to 2,000 m running roughly north to south, with the Imphal Basin in the middle. The inhabitants are of Mongoloid descent and speak a language belonging to the Tibeto-Burman branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. The Naga people, who are sedentary and practice terrace farming, live in the Naga Hills in the north, while the Kuki people, who are nomadic and practice slash-and-burn agriculture, live in the Chin Hills in the south.
