Manipur [State] (English spelling)

A state in the northeastern corner of India. It has an area of 22,300 km2 and a population of 1.84 million (1991). Its capital is Imphal. It is made up of several mountain ranges at altitudes of 1,500 to 2,000 m running roughly north to south, with the Imphal Basin in the middle. The inhabitants are of Mongoloid descent and speak a language belonging to the Tibeto-Burman branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. The Naga people, who are sedentary and practice terrace farming, live in the Naga Hills in the north, while the Kuki people, who are nomadic and practice slash-and-burn agriculture, live in the Chin Hills in the south. About two-thirds of the population is concentrated in the central basin, where the main ethnic group, the Meitei, live.

インド北東端の州。面積2万2300km2，人口184万(1991)。州都はインパール。ほぼ南北に走る標高1500～2000mの数条の山地群からなり，中央にインパール盆地が介在する。住民はシナ･チベット語族のチベット･ビルマ語派に属する言語を話し，モンゴロイドである。北のナガ丘陵には階段耕作を営む定着的なナガ族が，また南のチン丘陵などには移動的な焼畑耕作民のクーキ族が住む。人口の約3分の2が中央の盆地に集中し，主要民族メイテイ族が住む。
