Born: 1748 in Smyrna (now Izmir, Turkey) [Died] 1833 A Greek man of letters who lived in Paris. He contributed to the study of ancient Greek literature and the establishment of the modern Greek language. He also became one of the spiritual leaders of the Greek people during the War of Independence. However, he himself considered independence premature, judging from the educational level of the Greeks at the time.
