Gero

[Formation of the Margraviate]
When the Kingdom of Germany was established in the early 10th century, King Otto I established the Nordmark in this region to defend against the Wends. Margrave Gero (?-965) conquered the area east of the Elbe River around 940 and established the bishopric of Brandenburg as a base for Christianization, but the Wends rebelled repeatedly after that, and in 983 the Germans were forced to retreat to the Elbe line. In 1134, Albrecht der Bär (?-1170) of the Askanier family was appointed Margrave of the Altmark west of the Elbe. By 1157, he had subjugated the Slavs east of the Elbe River again, and he actively attracted immigrants from northwestern Germany to build villages and towns, calling himself Margrave of Brandenburg.
