"Complete Music Encyclopedia"

...From the Renaissance to the Baroque (15th to 18th centuries), instrumental music developed in particular, and the basic form of most of the instruments used in modern orchestras and chamber music was established. A detailed description of musical instruments can be found in the second volume (1619) of Syntagma musicum (3 volumes) by M. Praetorius (c. 1571-1621), which is said to be the oldest musical encyclopedia in Europe. The Japanese word "musical instrument" is a Chinese character derived from China, but the concept, like the word "music," was strongly influenced by European culture imported in modern times, and began to be used mainly to mean European musical instruments.
