Tosa Mitsuyoshi

A painter of the Momoyama period. He was a pupil of Tosa Mitsushige and is thought to have been called Genji (Genji), and is believed to have inherited the picture books and documents of the Tosa family from his master Mitsushige, who passed them on to him in place of Mitsumoto, who died unexpectedly. He shaved his head and took the name Kyūgō (Kyūgō). The Tosa Family Documents contain letters from Kano Eitoku and Kano Sanraku addressed to Kyūgō, and it seems that he maintained contact with the central art world of the time, but he himself lived in Sakai all his life, and produced detailed works inspired by court literature such as The Tale of Genji. His representative works include "Tale of Genji Sketchbook" (Kyoto National Museum), "Tale of Genji Handbook" (Kuboso Memorial Museum of Art), and "Twelve Months Sketchbook" (private collection).

桃山時代の画家。土佐光茂の門人で,玄二(源二)と称した人物と考えられ,師光茂より,不慮の死をとげた光元に代わって土佐家代々の絵本や証文などを譲り受けたとみられる。剃髪して久翌(休翌)と号した。『土佐家文書』には,久翌に宛てた狩野永徳や狩野山楽からの書状が収められ,当時の中央画壇とは接触を保っていたようであるが,自身は終生堺の地にあって,『源氏物語』などの王朝文学に取材した精密な作品を描いている。代表作に「源氏物語画帖」(京都国立博物館蔵),「源氏物語手鑑」(久保惣記念美術館蔵),「十二ケ月風俗画帖」(個人蔵)などがある。
