Princess Ohime

The eldest daughter of Minamoto no Yoritomo and Hojo Masako. In 1183, she was engaged to Kiso Yoshinaka's eldest son, Shimizu no Kanja Yoshitaka (then 11 years old), but when Yoshinaka was defeated and killed in 1184, Yoshitaka, who was in Kamakura, was also killed by Yoritomo, and in the grief, Ohime suffered from depression. Yoritomo and his wife had been negotiating for their daughter to become an Imperial consort since the first year of the Kenkyu era, and at one point even considered remarrying her to their nephew, Ichijo Takayoshi, but in the end, in 1190, they accompanied her to Kyoto, hoping to facilitate her entry into the Imperial Court into the Imperial Court of Emperor Gotoba. However, they were persuaded by Tsuchimikado Michichika, and this led to the downfall of pro-shogunate nobles such as Kujo Kanezane (the Coup of 1190). When Ohime died the following year, her younger sister, Miwata, became a candidate for the position of empress instead.

源頼朝と北条政子の長女。寿永2(1183)年木曾義仲の長男志水冠者義高(当時11歳)と婚約したが,元暦1(1184)年義仲が敗死すると,鎌倉にあった義高も頼朝に殺され,悲しみの中で大姫は鬱病に苦しんだ。頼朝夫妻は建久初年以来,この娘の入内交渉に着手し,一時期甥の一条高能に再嫁させることも考えたが,結局建久6年帯同上洛,後鳥羽天皇への入内促進を願ったものの,逆に土御門通親に乗ぜられて九条兼実ら親幕派公卿の失脚を招いた(建久7年の政変)。翌年大姫の死により,替わって妹の三幡が妃候補になった。
