Hiva Oa (island) (English spelling)

Japanese: ヒバ･オア[島]（英語表記）Île Hiva Oa

Located in the central South Pacific, Atuona is the largest island in the French overseas territory of the Marquesas. It has an area of 200 km2 and a population of about 1,000. It is a mountainous volcanic island with cliffs rising to 150-300m on the south and southwest coasts, and the island's highest peak, Mount Temetiu, is about 1,200m above sea level. Atuona, the center of the island, which is home to a radio station and hospital, was the headquarters of the French government of the Marquis in 1904, but was moved to Taiohae on Nuku Hiva in the 1940s. The painter Gauguin died here.

中部南太平洋，フランスの海外領土マルキーズ(マルケサス)諸島の中で最大の島。面積200km2，人口約1000。山がちの火山島で，南岸と南西岸には高さ150～300mにおよぶ断崖が切り立ち，島の最高峰テメティウ山は標高が約1200mある。ラジオ放送局，病院などがある島の中心アトゥオナには，1904年からフランスのマルキーズ統治の本拠が置かれていたが，40年代にヌクヒバ島のタイオハエに移された。画家ゴーギャンはここで亡くなった。
