Located in the central South Pacific, Atuona is the largest island in the French overseas territory of the Marquesas. It has an area of 200 km2 and a population of about 1,000. It is a mountainous volcanic island with cliffs rising to 150-300m on the south and southwest coasts, and the island's highest peak, Mount Temetiu, is about 1,200m above sea level. Atuona, the center of the island, which is home to a radio station and hospital, was the headquarters of the French government of the Marquis in 1904, but was moved to Taiohae on Nuku Hiva in the 1940s. The painter Gauguin died here. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
