[Cause]
The cause of atopic dermatitis was completely unknown until the mid-1980s. Until then, allergies to dandruff, or to metals such as chromium, mercury, and nickel that resembled atopic dermatitis had been called pseudoatopic dermatitis (Shanon, 1965), but the true cause had remained unknown for half a century. In 1967, Kosei Ishizaka discovered the serum antibody IgE, and it was subsequently discovered that in atopic dermatitis, the level of IgE increases to over 1,000 units, and sometimes to several thousand or even 20,000 units.
