Collection of Grass Herbs - Souanshu

Collection of Grass Herbs - Souanshu

This is a private collection of poems by the poetic monk Ton'a from the end of the Kamakura period, during the Northern and Southern Courts period. It consists of 10 volumes in the main volume and 5 volumes in the sequel. The main volume is divided into four sections: Four Seasons, Love, Miscellaneous, Journeys, Sorrow, Buddhism, Gods, and Congratulations, and contains approximately 1,400 poems. It is said to have been completed around 1359 (Shohei 14, Enbun 4). The sequel is organized into four sections: Four Seasons, Love, Miscellaneous, Miscellaneous Style, and Renga, and contains 560 poems and 100 Renga phrases. The poems in this collection are in the traditional, gentle and elegant style of Nijo school poetry. For this reason, it was revered by court poets as a typical example of the Nijo school's poetry style throughout the Muromachi and Edo periods, and many commentaries on it were published, including "Sōanshu Mougyūgenkai" (Kagawa Sen'a) and "Sōanshu Tamahahaki" (Motoori Norinaga).
