1810‐77 A French businessman who succeeded in running the first department store in Paris, Bon Marché, in the 19th century. Around 1830, stores called magasins de nouveauté, which sold fabrics in large quantities, began appearing in Paris, and Bon Marché learned how to sell in large quantities at one of these stores. In 1852, he became the owner of Bon Marché, which still had only 12 employees, and took advantage of the economic prosperity of the Second Empire to develop department store business.
