The first constitution of the Philippines was enacted in 1899. Its official name is the Constitution of the Republic of the Philippines. The Philippine Revolution to overthrow Spanish colonial rule began in August 1896, and the revolutionary government, with Aguinaldo as president, held a revolutionary assembly (commonly known as the Malolos Assembly) in the town of Malolos, Bulacan province in central Luzon in September 1898. The assembly was dominated by the wealthy class, including large landowners, merchants, and lawyers, and in order to control the leadership of the revolution, they rushed to enact a constitution that absolutized the power of the assembly.
