1870‐1908 Russian revolutionary. Leader of the Socialist Revolutionary Party. A Jewish pharmacist from Kovno County, Lithuania, he participated in the founding of the Socialist Revolutionary Party, organized the party's combat group that used terrorist methods, and became its leader. He was arrested in May 1903 and sentenced to life imprisonment, but in 1906 he escaped from Akatui Prison in Eastern Siberia and traveled to Japan and Europe.
