200-spotted ladybird - 200-spotted ladybird

Japanese: ニジュウヤホシテントウ - にじゅうやほしてんとう
200-spotted ladybird - 200-spotted ladybird

An insect belonging to the family Coccinellidae in the order Coleoptera of the class Insecta. It is a major pest of eggplants, found widely in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and the Ryukyu Islands, as well as Taiwan, China, and the tropical Orient. Its body length is 6-7 mm. Its hemispherical body is yellowish brown or reddish brown, but has a dull luster due to the dense covering of short gray hairs. There are 3-6 black markings on the pronotum and 14 on each of the upper spurs, but some may disappear. Both adults and larvae feed on the leaves of solanaceous plants such as eggplant, potato, and tomato, leaving veins and creating a net-like pattern. Overwintering females lay an average of 500 eggs from spring, and the next generation of adults emerge after about 40 days on average, and the females lay even more eggs. The adults emerge about a month later and overwinter. The larvae are white, spindle-shaped, and thick, with two pairs of black dendrites on the pronotum and three pairs on each of the other segments. Species in the same genus include the large 24-spotted ladybird beetle, a pest of potatoes, and the 12-spotted ladybird beetle, which infests cucumbers.
