Kickboxing

Japanese:
Kickboxing

A fighting sport similar to boxing. It is a sport unique to Japan that combines Japanese karate with Thai boxing (Muay Thai), the national sport of Thailand. In Thai boxing, the main weapon is footwork, and knee kicks and elbow strikes, which are not allowed in boxing rules, are allowed. Kickboxing adds karate kicks and throws to this.

The competition consists of three to five rounds, each lasting three minutes, with a two-minute break between each round. The judges are a chief referee and two assistant referees. Scoring is based on a five-point deduction system. There are seven weight classes, the same as in boxing, and gloves are available in weights from 4 to 8 ounces.

In 1964, three Kyokushin karate fighters traveled to Thailand. Osamu Noguchi (1934-2016), who organized the match, was impressed by the speed, thrill, and power that was different from boxing, and invented kickboxing. The first match to be open to the public was in April 1966, when Tadashi Sawamura (1943-2021) made his debut, and the following year it was broadcast nationwide on television. Currently, there are the Japan Kickboxing Commission and the All Japan Kickboxing Commission, which respects the rules of original Thai boxing. In 1978, Toshio Fujiwara (1948- ) became the first foreign champion in the 500-year history of Muay Thai.
