Born: 1610/1612.11. Troyes Died May 30, 1695. Paris. French painter. Studied under J. Boucher in Bruges in 1624, and under S. Boué in Paris in 1627. He lived in Italy from 1630, returning to Paris in 1657 and working as a court portrait painter. In 1663 he achieved success with the ceiling painting of the Basilica of Val de Grace. He also painted mythological and allegorical scenes, but along with Roger de Pierres and others he came into conflict with the classicist of the time, Le Brun, and supported the colors of Rubens, paving the way for 18th century Rococo art. After Le Brun's death in 1690, he became president of the Royal Academy and chief painter to the royal household. His most famous work is Portrait of the Marquis de Maintenon (1691, Louvre Museum).
