A cold-tolerant perennial plant of the Asteraceae family native to North America. The name Cardinalis novae-angliae L. officially refers to this species, but it is generally treated as a general term for the closely related horticultural varieties A. novae - angliae L. (English name New England aster), A. amellus L. (English name Italian aster), and A. dumosus L. The perennial-flowering variety known in Japan as Shinonomegiku also belongs to this group. 北アメリカ原産のキク科の耐寒性多年草。ユウゼンギクの名は,正式には本種のことであるが,一般的には,これと近縁のアメリカシオンA.novae‐angliae L.(英名New England aster)やA.amellus L.(英名Italian aster),A.dumosus L.などの園芸品種の総称として扱われていることが多い。また,日本でシノノメギクと呼ばれる四季咲性をもつ品種も,この一群のものである。
