A cold-tolerant perennial plant of the Asteraceae family native to North America. The name Cardinalis novae-angliae L. officially refers to this species, but it is generally treated as a general term for the closely related horticultural varieties A. novae - angliae L. (English name New England aster), A. amellus L. (English name Italian aster), and A. dumosus L. The perennial-flowering variety known in Japan as Shinonomegiku also belongs to this group.
