A general term for tiny solid particles, gases, charged particles, etc. that exist in the space between planets in the solar system. Particularly tiny solid particles are called interplanetary dust. Most are 0.1 mm or less in diameter. They scatter sunlight, producing zodiacal light and countersunlight. Interplanetary dust orbits the Sun, but because it is so tiny, it is affected by the Sun's light pressure and gradually approaches the Sun (to a distance of about four times the radius of the Sun).
