An old town in Awa District, southern Chiba Prefecture. It occupies hilly land in the Maruyama River basin and faces the Pacific Ocean to the southeast. It is one of the centers of dairy farming in Boso, carrying on the traditions of Mineoka Ranch, which dates back to the Middle Ages. Rice and vegetables are grown here. The Uchibo Line runs through the town. In March 2006, it merged with the towns of Tomiura, Toyama, Shirahama, Chikura, Wada, and Miyoshi in Awa District to become a city, Minamiboso City. 千葉県南部,安房(あわ)郡の旧町。丸山川流域の丘陵地を占め,南東は太平洋に面する。中世以来の嶺岡(みねおか)牧場の伝統を継ぎ房州酪農の一中心。米,野菜が栽培される。内房線が通じる。2006年3月,安房郡富浦町,富山町,白浜町,千倉町,和田町,三芳村と合併し市制,南房総市となる。44.11km2。5806人(2003)。
