Akkeshi Bay - Akkeshiwan

A bay facing the North Pacific Ocean in eastern Hokkaido. It is located north of a line connecting the Suehiro district of Akkeshi Town, Kojima, Daikoku Island, and Shiriha Cape in Kushiro Town under the jurisdiction of the Kushiro Regional Development Bureau, and the water is less than 30 meters deep. At the back of the bay is Akkeshi Port. It was known as a herring fishing ground until around 1965, and the reef area around Shiriha Cape and Kojima is still a good fishing ground for natural kelp. Daikoku Island is a breeding ground for seabirds such as Pale-legged Storm Petrels and Tufted Puffins, and is designated as a national natural monument. Cape Shiriha and Cape Aicup have developed sea cliffs and are scenic spots in Akkeshi Prefectural Natural Park. Akkeshi City developed across the waterway leading to Lake Akkeshi at the back of the bay, and the Akkeshi Ohashi Bridge spans the waterway.

北海道東部、北太平洋に臨む湾入。釧路(くしろ)総合振興局管内の厚岸町末広(まびろ)地区、小島、大黒(だいこく)島、釧路町尻羽(しりは)岬を結ぶ線以北にあり、水深30メートル以内。湾奥には厚岸港がある。1965年（昭和40）ごろまでニシン漁場として知られ、尻羽岬と小島周辺の暗礁地帯はいまも天然コンブの好漁場。大黒島はコシジロウミツバメ、エトピリカなどの海鳥繁殖地で国の天然記念物に指定されている。尻羽岬、アイカップ崎は海食崖(がい)が発達し厚岸道立自然公園の景勝地。湾奥の厚岸湖へ通じる水路を挟んで厚岸市街が発達し、水路に厚岸大橋が架かっている。
