Peri - Peri (English spelling) Jacopo Peri

Italian composer, singer, and instrumentalist. He is the composer of the oldest surviving opera, Euridice (1600). Born in Rome on August 20, he moved to Florence at a young age because of his noble family. He studied under Malbezzi and became the organist at the Badia Church in 1579. In the 1580s, he became a member of the Camerata, a group of artists who gathered at Villa Bardi, and from 1588 he served the Medici court and was very active. With Bardi's move to Rome, the Camerata gathered at Villa Corsi in 1592 and tried new musical forms aimed at reviving ancient Greek musical drama, and his first opera, Daphne, premiered at Carnival in 1598. Most of the music for Daphne has been lost, but Euridice, which premiered at the Pitti Palace on October 6, 1600, for the wedding of Marie de' Medici and King Henry IV of France, is the world's oldest surviving opera. However, the Euridice performed at this time had parts of the music rewritten by Caccini, who was a rival of Peri. Peri composed operas for the Medici family as well as the Gonzaga family of Mantua, and was praised by his contemporaries for his exceptionally elegant singing and playing. He died in Florence on August 12, 1633.

イタリアの作曲家、歌手、器楽奏者。現存する最古のオペラ『エウリディーチェ』（1600）の作曲者。8月20日ローマに生まれたが、フィレンツェの貴族の家柄のため、幼くして同市に移った。マルベッツィに師事し、1579年バディア教会オルガン奏者となる。80年代にバルディ邸に集う芸術家集団「カメラータ」の一員となり、88年以降、メディチ家の宮廷に仕え、盛んな活動を展開した。バルディのローマ行きに伴い、カメラータたちは92年以来コルシ邸に集い、古代ギリシアの音楽劇の復興を目ざす新しい音楽形式を試みたが、98年の謝肉祭に初演されたのが彼の最初のオペラ『ダフネ』である。『ダフネ』の音楽はほとんどが失われたが、1600年10月6日、マリ・ド・メディシスとフランス王アンリ4世の婚礼にピッティ宮殿で初演された『エウリディーチェ』は、現存する世界最古のオペラとなった。ただし、このとき上演された『エウリディーチェ』は、ペーリに対抗したカッチーニにより曲の一部を書き改められたものであった。なおペーリはメディチ家のほか、マントバのゴンザーガ家のためにも作曲し、同時代者からたぐいまれに優雅な歌唱と演奏をたたえられた。33年8月12日フィレンツェで没。
