A bird of the family Scolopacidae, order Charadriiformes. Total length about 15 cm. One of the small snipes abundant in Japan. It breeds in the tundra of northeastern Siberia and western Alaska, and migrates to South Asia, Australia, and New Zealand in winter. It migrates to Japan in spring and autumn as a migratory bird. Along with the White-tailed Sandpiper, it is one of the smallest species of snipes that migrate to Japan, and its name comes from the fact that it is a bird born in the same year. In summer plumage, the base of the beak is white, and the head, face, neck, and chest are reddish brown, with dark vertical stripes on the head, neck, and chest.

チドリ目シギ科の鳥。全長約15cm。日本では数の多い小型のシギの一つ。シベリア北東部およびアラスカ西部のツンドラ帯で繁殖し，冬は南アジア，オーストラリア，ニュージーランドに渡る。日本には旅鳥として春と秋に渡来する。日本に渡来するシギ類の中ではオジロトウネンとともに最小種に属し，当年子（とうねんご），つまりその年生れの鳥という意味からこの名がついた。夏羽ではくちばしの根もとは白く，頭上，顔，くび，胸は赤褐色で，頭上，くび，胸には暗色の縦斑がある。
