The ruins of a city on the southern edge of the Sahara in West Africa are believed to have been the capital of the Kingdom of Ghana, which flourished from the 8th to 11th centuries. It is located in a semi-desert region in what is now southeastern Mauritania. In the 20th century, efforts to locate the remains of the Kingdom of Ghana's capital based on fragmentary evidence were undertaken mainly by French researchers, and since the excavation by the Frenchman de Maiziere in 1914, numerous archaeological investigations have been carried out. The main part is a city ruin with many stone buildings, measuring about 1 km square on a hill, and there was probably a settlement of clay dwellings in the surrounding area, as many fragments of pottery have been found.

西アフリカのサハラ南縁に，8～11世紀に栄えたガーナ王国の都と推定される都市遺跡。現在のモーリタニア南東部の半砂漠性の地方にある。ガーナ王国の都のあとを，断片的な資料をたよりに探りあてようとする作業が，20世紀になって，主としてフランス人の手で進められ，1914年のフランス人ド･メジエールの発掘以来，たびたび考古学的調査が行われてきた。主要部分は，丘の上の約1km四方の，石造建造物の多い都市遺跡で，その周囲にも，おそらく煉り土の住居集落があったらしく，土器片などが多数発見されている。
