A pet dog breed. It is a very beautiful dog, covered entirely in pure white, long, soft, silky fur, and its pitch black nose and dark eyes accentuate the beauty of its pure white. It is named after the island of Malta in the Mediterranean, but there are no historical records or legends about it, and its origins are unknown. However, it was widely known in Europe and the United States around 1800, and is widely welcomed as a pet dog due to its beautiful appearance, gentle nature, and high intelligence. Its weight should be under 3kg, with 1.3kg being the ideal, and it is one of the most popular dog breeds in Japan.

愛玩用の一犬種。全身が純白の長くて柔らかい絹糸状の被毛で覆われているひじょうに美しいイヌで，真黒な鼻端と暗色の目がことさら純白の美しさを強調している。地中海のマルタ島原産ということからこの名称で呼ばれるが，史実の記録や伝承はまったくなく，起源は不明である。しかし，1800年ころには欧米で広く知られており，美しい容姿と穏和で高い知能から愛玩犬として広く迎えられている。体重は3kg以下がよく，理想は1.3kgといわれ，日本では最も人気の高い犬種の一つである。
