A pulse circuit with strong positive feedback created by connecting two inverting amplifier circuits in series and in a ring is called a multivibrator. There are three types of multivibrators, as described below, depending on whether the inverting amplifier circuits are connected by DC or AC coupling. DC coupling creates a stable state, while AC coupling creates a metastable state. (1) When both coupling circuits are DC coupled, the circuit configuration and operation are symmetrical, and there are two completely equal stable states. When an input that determines one stable state is applied, the circuit will maintain that state until the next input that determines the other stable state is applied.

2個の反転増幅回路を直列･環状に結合することによって強い正帰還をかけたパルス回路を総称してマルチバイブレーターと呼ぶ。反転増幅回路間の結合が直流結合であるか交流結合であるかによって以下に述べる3種類の形態がある。直流結合は安定状態を，交流結合は準安定状態を作る。(1)2ヵ所ある結合回路が両方とも直流結合であるものは回路構成や動作が対称となり，まったく対等な二つの安定状態をもつ。一方の安定状態を定める入力が加えられると，次に他方の安定状態を定める入力が加えられるまでその状態を保持する回路となる。
