Brentano, Clemens
Born: September 8, 1778 Ehrenbreitstein
[Died] July 28, 1842. Aschaffenburg German poet and novelist. His father was an Italian-born merchant, and his mother was Maximiliane, whom Goethe admired in his youth. His sister Bettina (later Mrs. Av. Arnim) is known for her epistolary novels about Goethe. He became acquainted with the Schlegel brothers and Tieck at the University of Jena. His talent for lyric poetry was recognized for his song poems such as Lorelei, which were included in his novel Godwi (1801), which he wrote while he was a student. In 1801, he became friends with Arnim in Göttingen, and moved to Heidelberg. Together, the two published Des Knaben Wunderhorn (3 volumes, 5-8), a collection of about 600 old German folk songs, nursery rhymes, and hymns, which had a great influence on later generations of poetry. In 1908, together with Arnim and J. Gelles, he founded the late Romantic journal Zeitung für Einsiedler (The Recluse's Newspaper). His other works include the comedy Ponce de Leon (04), a play based on Slavic legend Die Gründung Prags (15), a pastoral novel The Tale of Bold Kasperl and the Beautiful Annerl (17), and the unfinished Romanzen vom Rosenkranz (Rosary Tales) (52).
