Born: July 24, 1686, Venice Died July 24, 1739. Italian composer from Brescia. He studied law and held important government positions, including membership in the Council of Forty in Venice and prefect of Pola. He also studied composition under A. Lotti and F. Gasparini, and composed operas, oratorios, cantatas, and instrumental pieces. His most famous work is the eight-volume Inspiration à poesie et musique (1724-26), in which he composed 50 psalms translated into Italian by G. Giustiniani in the style of a cantata, and which was performed in Germany as well. He was also known as a writer, writing opera librettos and a satirical piece about the operas of the time, The Theatre of the Day (c. 1720).
