1734‐1806 French author. Born Nicolas Edme Retif. His pen name, Retif, is also spelled Rétif. He was born to a relatively wealthy farming family in the village of Sacy near Auxerre in Burgundy. After spending an idyllic childhood in his hometown, he was sent to live with his older brother, who was a priest, in preparation for entering the seminary. However, due to his precocious and passionate nature, he gave up on the priesthood and at the age of 17, he went to live as an apprentice at the factory of F. Fournier, a famous printer in Auxerre.
