French author. Born Nicolas Edme Retif. His pen name, Retif, is also spelled Rétif. He was born to a relatively wealthy farming family in the village of Sacy near Auxerre in Burgundy. After spending an idyllic childhood in his hometown, he was sent to live with his older brother, who was a priest, in preparation for entering the seminary. However, due to his precocious and passionate nature, he gave up on the priesthood and at the age of 17, he went to live as an apprentice at the factory of F. Fournier, a famous printer in Auxerre.

フランスの作家。本名，Nicolas Edme Retif。筆名のレティフはRétifとも綴る。ブルゴーニュ，オーセール市近傍サシ村の比較的裕福な農家に生まれた。故郷の村で牧歌的な少年時代を過ごしたのち，神学校へ入る準備のため司祭職にあった兄のもとにあずけられたが，早熟で多情な性格が災いして聖職に就くことをあきらめ，17歳の時，オーセールの名高い印刷業者F.フールニエの工場に職工見習として住み込む。
