The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (English: Les Parapluies de Cherbourg)

A French-German co-production from 1964, directed by Jacques Demy. A unique French musical film in which all the lines are sung. A unique attempt that differs from Hollywood musical films, it won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival and is Jacques Demy's masterpiece that has been highly praised worldwide. It was also a huge box-office success. Set in the town of Cherbourg, it depicts the love and separation between a young girl played by Catherine Deneuve and a poor young car mechanic. The music, composed by Michel Legrand, who had worked with Demy since his first feature film, Lola (1960), has a pop and catchy melody that is outstanding. Other works that combine director Demy, music by Legrand, and starring Deneuve include Les Young Girls of Rochefort (1966), Les Donkeys and Princess (1970), and Mon Paris (1973). The costumes and art, boldly using colorful primary colors, are vibrant and enhance the fairy-tale effect.

フランスとドイツの合作映画。1964年作品。監督ジャック・ドゥミ。すべての台詞(せりふ)が歌になっている異色のフランス製ミュージカル映画。ハリウッドのミュージカル映画とは異なる独特の試みで、カンヌ国際映画祭のグランプリを受賞したほか、世界的に高い評価を受けたジャック・ドゥミの代表作。興行的にも大成功を収めた。シェルブールの町を舞台に、カトリーヌ・ドヌーブ演じる若い娘と貧しい自動車修理工の青年の恋と別離を描く。ドゥミの長編第1作『ローラ』（1960）からコンビを組んでいた作曲家のミシェル・ルグランが担当した楽曲の、ポピュラーで耳に残るメロディが秀逸。ドゥミ監督、ルグラン音楽、ドヌーブ主演の組み合わせによる作品は、ほかにも『ロシュフォールの恋人たち』（1966）、『ロバと王女』（1970）、『モン・パリ』（1973）の3作がある。色とりどりの原色を大胆に用いた衣装と美術が鮮やかで、おとぎ話のような効果を高めている。
