Marković - Svetozar Marković

Marković - Svetozar Marković

Pioneer of Serbian socialism. He graduated from the Industrial Technical School in Belgrade, and then studied in St. Petersburg and Zurich from 1860 to 1870. He was influenced by the ideas of Russian revolutionaries such as Dobrolyubov, Lavrov, and Chernyshevsky, as well as the ideas of the First International. In the end, he believed that in order to reform Serbian rural society, socialism should be based on the doctrine of Chernyshevsky, who considered socialism to be centered on Russian rural communities, and attempted to build socialism with the rural community "zadrga" at its core. He also argued that democratic unification of the Balkan Peninsula based on federalism was necessary for the liberation of the Balkan peoples. He displayed his talents not only in politics and economics but also in literature through newspapers and magazines, but died young. His ideas had a great influence on the subsequent Serbian socialist movement.
