A city in Lubelskie Voivodeship in eastern Poland. In 1580, the Polish commander-in-chief Jan Zamoyski (1542-1605) established his residence here. The entire city was built in the Renaissance style, designed by architect Bernardo Morando, who was invited from Padua, Italy. After the First Partition of Poland in 1772, it came under Austrian occupation and became the administrative and educational center. Since 1821, it has been part of Russian Poland. During World War II, the area was subjected to severe persecution by the German army, with 100,000 Poles forced to emigrate, and 8,000 were massacred in the rotunda. Reconstruction of the old town began in 1975. The old town, which includes a cathedral (1593-1628) designed by Morando and a town hall from the early 17th century, was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. Population: 67,160 (2002). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
