Nickel sulfate. The anhydrous hydrate has the chemical formula NiSO 4 and a formula weight of 154.8. Mono-, di-, tetra-, hexa- and heptahydrates are known. The heptahydrate occurs naturally as morensite, but it can be obtained as green needles by dissolving nickel, nickel(II) oxide, nickel(II) hydroxide or nickel carbonate in dilute sulfuric acid and evaporating at room temperature. It effloresces in air to a white powder, but returns to green when water is added. It loses four molecules at 100°C, six molecules at 103.3°C, and all water at 279.4°C. It forms the Tutton salt type double salt M I 2 Ni(SO 4 ) 2 6H 2 O with the sulfates of potassium, rubidium, cesium, ammonium and thallium(I). It is used in nickel plating, hydrogenation catalysts, mordants, and the manufacture of pigments.
