An ancient city on the east bank of the upper Tigris River. Diyarbakir, now in Turkey. From Persia it became part of the Roman Empire in 230. It was conquered by the Arabs in 638, and became part of the Ottoman Empire in 1517. Christian missions were established there early on, and the oldest identifiable bishopric (late 4th century) belonged to the Church of Antioch. Important bishoprics of Nestorian and Jacobite sects were established here, but Christian influence declined after the 14th century. In the 17th century it became the seat of the Catholicos of the Armenian Church. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
