"Hitsu" means a box. It refers to a property storage business and its building operated in large cities such as Chang'an during the Tang Dynasty in China. It is thought that it may have evolved from a mansion (a storehouse, inn, and business that also served as a broker) that played a central role in commerce during the Tang Dynasty. In the Song Dynasty, places such as gambling halls and detention centers were also called "Hitsubo".
