Ghassan tribe

…the Ghassanids, a branch of the great southern Arabian tribe Azd, migrated to Syria in the 4th century, became Christians, and established a dynasty in the 5th century in the area stretching from the Dead Sea to Damascus, with their capital at Jabiyah. From the beginning of the 6th century onwards, they received pensions from the Byzantine Empire and were responsible for defending the borders against the invasion of nomads.

...The Arab penetration from the desert to the agricultural regions was long and slow, and it is difficult to draw a clear boundary line in terms of language and the degree of interbreeding. In the Byzantine period, the representative of such semi-settled Arab nomads in the frontier regions was the Ghassanids. Many similar tribes lived in the Syrian frontier, and many of them had already become sedentary.
