Avidity - Abidity

...In contrast, the binding strength of a normal antigen, which has many different determinants on its molecule, with an antibody can only be calculated as the average of the binding strengths of each determinant. This value is less precise than affinity, so it is distinguished from it by being called avidity. In many antigen-antibody systems, the reaction eventually progresses to the second phase, but in the case of a monovalent hapten-antibody reaction or a polyvalent antigen, if either the antibody or the antigen is in large excess or is fixed to the surface of a membrane, the reaction often stops here.
